Knee pain after a workout is an occasional problem for people of all ages. Most knee pain occurs when you exercise your leg muscles, make sudden movements, or jumps, like during football practice or volleyball games. 


Other activities that can cause knee pain include running up and downstairs too quickly, playing basketball on a hardwood floor, and climbing hills fast. Knee pain may also occur because you are overweight or have high blood pressure. 


It can result from arthritis in the joint between your thigh bone and shinbone (also called the tibia). Another possible cause is chondromalacia patella -- softening of the cartilage under the kneecap.





Causes of knee pain after exercise

The most common causes of knee pain after a workout are overuse, muscle fatigue, or injury. Overuse is the result of an increase in training intensity or duration. Muscle fatigue can occur when you do too much, too soon. If your muscles are fatigued, they may cramp or become sore during workouts. Injury happens when you push yourself to the limit and overextend your joints. Your doctor might also be able to help with any knee pain after a workout.




Damaged tendons and ligaments

A tendon is a tough band of fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone. A ligament joins two bones together. These tendons and ligaments are very strong, but they can become injured or inflamed if overused or not taken care of.

The first step is to visit your doctor or physical therapist for an evaluation and diagnosis. Once the source of pain has been identified, treatment will begin. Treatment could include modifying your exercise routine, taking anti-inflammatory medications, or other steps necessary for recovery.


The best way to treat knee pain after a workout is to rest it for a few days. Apply ice packs on the knee and elevate it while lying on your back. If the pain persists, see your doctor. You may need an x-ray or MRI. Also, replace sports shoes and sneakers with low-heeled sandals if you want to continue working out despite knee pain.

To perform this process, you need some heat-producing oil like almond or olive oil. Now put both your knees on a soft surface like a bed, pillow, etc., then apply some oil on your hands; now knead into your skin or leg gently but firmly. This will help to reduce swelling of the knee joint and also release tightness in ligaments around it.

Exercise has several benefits, but it can also cause pain. Knee pain is a common injury that is usually caused by overuse or improper training. If you are experiencing knee pain after your workout, you should refer to your physician for advice on how to treat the condition. He may prescribe physical therapy and exercises that target the area around the knee joint. Activities such as bicycling, running and sports will aggravate your injuries until they heal properly.
